Coveted painting skills

Lucas Cranach the Elder was a German Renaissance painter and draftsman. Cranach the Elder was born in 1472 in Kronach, Oberfranken, Germany and died in 1553 in Weimar. He became acquainted with the art through his father, and in 1505 he joined the chiefs of the Sachsens ministry as a life painter and portrait painter. But this was not the only thing Cranach the Elder painted. He was very well travelled. So well-travelled that he was honoured to paint the Dutch prince, Karl V. It is therefore safe to say that his artistic painting skills were highly sought after by the high-ranking gentlemen of the Renaissance.

Uneven lines and naked bodies

Although Cranach the Elder was sought after, his idiom in the world of painting was slightly undeveloped. This is evidenced by his uneven lines and his colouring, suggesting a lack of picturesque finesse and accuracy. Another distinctive feature of his style is his fascination with the naked body and general focus on humanism. This fascination is especially evident here on the site. Here at Permild & Rosengreen you can find several of the beautiful paintings by Cranach the Elder, which contains designs consisting of detailed, naked bodies.
