The man with the many names

Katsushika Hokusai was Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and graphic artist during the Edo period, which is a Japanese period that stretched from 1603 to 1868. Hokusai was born on October 31th, 1760, near the Katsushika district of Edo, Japan. At birth, Hokusai was baptised Tokitarō, but has been called over 30 named. It is believed that his father was a well-known mirror maker in Japan. Hokusai began painting around the age of six, drawing inspiration from the beautiful paintings his father decorated the mirrors with. In 1800, Hokusai developed a greater interest and talent for painting ukiyo-e paintings, and adapted the name he is best known for, namely Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai became more and more famous in the coming decade, both as a result or his art and his talent for self-promotion.
