From Japan to the United States of America

Ohara Koson was a Japanese painter and print designer, born in Ohara Matao in Japan 1877 and died in Tokyo, 1945. It is said that Koson began taking an interest in and study painting and design in Ishikawa Prefecture Techinal School between 1889 and 1893. He also studied painting with the world-renowned painter, Suzuki Kason, from whom he also drew much of his inspiration for printing. From about 1926 be became acquainted with the publisher, Watanabe Shōzaburō. Through his association with Shōzaburō, Koson’s work was exhibited abroad and his prints sold well, especially in the United States of America. He was active in designing and painting prints until about 1935, and died ten years later in his Tokyo home.
