Keld Helmer-Petersen is the most recognized Danish art photographer abroad, and his international fame comes from the landmark book 122 Color Photographs, published in 1948.

In the 1950s, he was particularly known for his invention of the so-called photographic technique, in which black and white colors were used without mid-tones.

In addition to 122 color photographs, Keld Helmer-Petersen has published several books. Among them the retrospective Frameworks in 1993 and in 2007 Keld Helmer-Petersen, Photographs 1941-1995.

He received, among other things, Thorvald Bindesbøll Medal, Danmarks Nationalbank's Anniversary Fund's Honorary Award, Palle Fogtdals Honorary Award and most recently the Association for Bookstore's Honorary Award.

In 2007, Keld Helmer-Petersen was awarded life-long artistic performance by Statens Kunstfond, and ornate Kastrup Airport Station with 2x16 large-format photographs.
